Do you ever feel overwhelmed thinking about the many ways you could improve? In the Book of Mormon , Alma taught, “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” 1 Here are four tips that can help you develop small and simple habits, leading to great growth and progress in your life.

You're more likely to follow through with your habits when you write them down!

1. Start small

Pick a small and simple daily habit that will help you grow in one of the following areas: spiritually, physically, intellectually, or emotionally. For example, a daily habit to grow physically might be to go for a 15-minute walk every day.

Try your best to not let yourself feel stressed by all of the things you could work on. Ask God in prayer what is most important for you to focus on. Listen to His guidance, and write down one daily habit you want to develop.

2. Habit stack

Next, pair your new habit with another habit you already do every day. This is called "habit stacking."

For example, if the habit you want to start is reading the scriptures every day, you could pair it with eating a meal: You might even begin to keep your scriptures in the same place you eat! That way, when you finish eating, you are reminded to read your scriptures. As you pair your new habit with something you already do every day, it will be easier to develop your new habit.

3. Lean on others

Having someone who supports you can be a huge help — especially when you're struggling to maintain your habit.

Samuel Quayee, a BYU-Pathway Worldwide student from Liberia, said, “The encouragement and camaraderie I have found in the PathwayConnect gatherings have been invaluable in helping me stay motivated.” Find a family member or friend, like Samuel did, who will cheer you on and help you stay motivated.

4. Keep going

Even when you do all you can, you may still fall short at times. That's okay! The key to success is to keep trying.

After two previous attempts, Gabriele Nogal, a student from Brazil, was approved to enroll in BYU-Pathway after working hard to improve her English. She said, “This process taught me to develop patience and diligence” — principles that helped her finish her bachelor’s degree .

Don’t worry if your efforts aren’t perfect. Instead, keep going and be sure to celebrate your progress along the way. Every small and simple effort you put forth will bring great things to pass. You can do this!
