Learning is a gift from Heavenly Father that helps us serve others and fulfill our purpose of becoming more like Him

I love learning. Currently, I am a student at BYU-Pathway Worldwide , and words cannot fully express my gratitude for this incredible opportunity. It has been a blessing for me and my family.
I want to share four principles I’ve been learning as a student and how they have impacted my life.
1) Education is a religious responsibility

At first, my kids didn’t understand why I decided to go back to school. One day, as I was rushing to finish an assignment, my oldest said, “Mom, why are you making your life so hard? You don’t need to study again; you are a mom and already have a degree.”
That became an opportunity for my husband and me to sit with them and explain that education is not just about a title. It is, as President Nelson said, "a lifelong religious responsibility."I told them that education is a calling to become more like our Creator, and it requires sacrifice. As we sacrifice our time and dedicate it to learning, we will move toward accomplishing our purpose on earth of becoming more like Heavenly Father.
2) There are two essential types of education

The first type of education is secular education, which gives us knowledge to succeed in this life and to bring with us in the next life. The second type is spiritual education, which also helps us navigate this life and prepare for eternal life. True wisdom comes from pursuing both.
Our beloved prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, is a great example of this balance. Although he is a highly respected and accomplished doctor, his greatest calling is as a special witness of Jesus Christ. He has dedicated his life to testifying of Christ and guiding us on the covenant path.
3) We must prioritize learning in the home

Recently, I had a conversation with my mother, and I was deeply touched by the story she shared about my grandmother, who built a school on her farm in Brazil. There, she taught her own kids and others how to read and write.
Later, my grandmother moved to the city so her kids could continue their education. She lived to see all of her grandkids graduate from college. I am so grateful my grandmother valued education and knew that it could change the course of our lives.
4) Learning how to receive revelation as a student is crucial
Revelation is vital in our learning process. Learning to discern good from bad and right from wrong is crucial as we seek knowledge. During my studies, the Holy Ghost has been my partner and my teacher.
Many times, learning a subject in a new language was very difficult for me, but I learned that I don’t need to do it alone — we can count on revelation, and the Lord can help us beyond our own capacities.
Learning helps us become more like God

I want to share my testimony that education is both a blessing and a calling for all of us. I am especially grateful for programs like seminary, institute, and BYU-Pathway. I understand that we should never stop learning. I’m thankful to be part of a Church that cares so much about educating its members. It shows me how much the Lord loves us, counts on us, and wants us to be like Him.
