I Am Because He Is

Learn how dependence on Jesus Christ is actually your greatest strength

Jesus Christ sits on a well and is accepting a drink of water from a Samaritan women.
Have you ever noticed how often you say “I am”? “I am smart. I am strong. I am worthy.” Or what about “I am not smart enough. I am not capable. I am not a finisher.”?

Sometimes the negative thoughts crowd our minds more often than the positive ones. When that happens, positive words can feel hard to believe. You may feel like you’re not enough. But you’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure this out by yourself.

The truth is that we aren’t supposed to rely on personal, positive self-talk to carry us; we are meant to depend on Jesus Christ.

We can gain greater confidence as we rely on the Savior.

Depend on “The Great I Am”

One of Christ’s names is “The Great I Am.” 1 Have you ever wondered why? Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught, “The Savior is not dependent on food or water or oxygen or any other substance or power or person for life. Both as Jehovah and Messiah, He is the great I Am.” 2

The “Great I Am” reminds us that He is the power source — we just need to connect. This is something BYU-Pathway Worldwide students have come to know is true for themselves:

Because He is

Because He is wisdom, I am smart enough

Chaimane Rafael from Mozambique wondered whether he was smart enough to continue school. But Rafael decided that, instead of believing his negative thoughts, he would turn to the right source of power to help him finish BYU-Pathway’s foundational courses.

“I trusted in the Lord and left my studies in His hands,” he said. “I prayed for help even when I felt that my English was not progressing. Through Heavenly Father and His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, I completed PathwayConnect courses.”

Because He is strength, I am strong enough

Joni Brummer from Idaho, USA, began BYU-Pathway while severely sick. “I prayed and asked Heavenly Father to bless me with the strength I needed to do my assignments, even though I wasn’t feeling well. Every week, I became a little stronger, not only physically but mentally and spiritually too.”

When negative thoughts come, we can plug in to the true source of power — Jesus Christ. As we stay connected to Him, He fills our minds with light and gives us strength to move forward in faith.

Trust Him

The Savior reminded Joseph Smith, the first prophet of Christ’s restored Church, to “listen to the voice of Jesus Christ, your Redeemer, the Great I Am, whose arm of mercy hath atoned for your sins.” 3

The same is true for you: the greatest strength you have is your dependence on Christ.

Put your confidence in Jesus Christ.

Take a moment to imagine Christ sitting beside you as you repeat these next phrases. What changes when you remember you are not saying these words alone?

I am smart.
I am worthy.
I am strong.

These “I am” statements become more powerful when they are rooted in Him. As you move forward in your BYU-Pathway journey, stay connected to Jesus Christ. He will remind you who you truly are.
